Another way that people's future is shaped by location--if you live in an area with "rigorous" high schools, you get some help. If you live in an area where public education is a joke, you don't. I'm all for encouraging a more rigorous education, but students can take only the classes that are offered.
EP that is my whole issue with this. I already hate the fact that schools get a lot of money from the property taxes in there areas. Good area - good school, really bad area - really bad schools. There has to be a better way, be it competition or whatever.
Have you heard what Highland Park (near Dallas) is doing? They're tired of Robin Hood laws and of the state legislature failing to put together an acceptable school funding plan, so they are passing the hat in their district to create a 10 MILLION DOLLAR endowment fund for their public schools.

Wow, what an interesting concept. I'll bet we could talk people here into that. Although we have pretty great public schools with the tax base.
