Student Loans - The American Way

So many people I know live pay-check-to-paycheck. It isn't who you'd think it be. These are young professionals in their thirties. Most have had substantial student loans and a mix of credit card expenditures on grocery bills and course books. It's amazing how this kind of debt can be debilitating. I saw this article in the PI today and identified with it immediately.

My requirements for law school: Good (in the top tier 50 schools) and cheap (under 15k a year). I ended up at University of Georgia, where after paying out of state tuition for one year, I got instate tuition. For about $5k a year I completed my law degree. I became a visiting student at a private school in Seattle where I paid 10K for one semester. Actually my employed husband paid it for me. It is easy to see how student loan debt could become unmanageable very easily.

Who needs Starbucks?

When I was in Athens, GA home to REM, the B-52's and many other alternative bands, there was a huge controversy about a Starbucks opening two doors down from an arty coffehouse called Blue Sky.

People were worried that Blue Sky would not survive the starbucks. It didn't occur to them that different types of people frequent Starbucks and those arty coffee houses with Open Mike nights and Poetry reading. Can they co-exist. I think so. Here is a very funny website from someone who supports those arty coffee houses.

Oregon Suicide Law Upheld

Interesting decision. Notice Roberts in the dissent with Scalia and Thomas. It's times like this I wonder WWRD (What Would Renquist Decide?).

I don't think I would ever take my own life even if I were dying, but then again I have never had a degenerative disease, cancer, or anything else that was life threatening.

Post Holiday Something

My daughter is turning two. I can't believe it has been two years since we had our first child. The world has changed so much in that time.

Christmas has new meaning. This year was a ball. Lucy played with all 9 of her cousins like a champ. Running behind them as if to say Me To! Me To!. What a great two years! I can't imagine life without them both.
